Exciting Opportunities and New Horizons - IS101

Hello everyone! My name is Mikayla Tam, and I’m currently a full-time student. This is my second year in college, and I'm learning how to balance life, work, and school. I currently live with my family, which includes my mom, dad, brother, and pug! I love hanging out with friends, going to the gym, going on walks, riding my bike, and playing instruments. I try to stay active as much as I can in my busy life and love playing sports as well.

My first impression of IS101 is that the work and content are easy, but staying on top of projects and devoting time are the hardest parts of the class. I also get the impression that the professor really does care about his students and their success in his class. I’m excited to explore more in the class, and I really like the LabSim interface we use. I enjoy doing the labs and watching the videos. I feel as if it's interactive and I learn more than if I were to just read a textbook.

The skill I chose to focus on is from 1.4.10, E-commerce Safety Facts. This section of LabSim discussed the importance of being careful with your data online when completing online transactions. This particular chapter spoke to me as I also run my own e-commerce business and I know how tricky it can be to spot scammers sometimes. Navigating the online business world can often be scary, as real-world money is at stake. This chapter served as a friendly reminder of the do’s and don'ts of the digital world.

  1. Glad you found the coursework & content easy and you like the LabSim user-interface, Mikayla :-)

Balancing life, work, and school may be more challenging part of the journey!

I know you will succeed in IS101-3005, Spring 2026 ^_^

  2. Hey Mikayla, I agree with you about the class not being impossible but definitely time consuming. There was one part of LabSim that really slowed me down, especially the email security section. It was harder than I expected to spot which messages were actually legitimate and which ones were phishing attempts. Some of them looked professional, like banking alerts or normal attachments from a friend, but when you look closely the sender address or the link is slightly different. That part made me realize how easy it is to miss small details if you are not paying attention. I think that is what makes online scams so effective, they look almost real. It took me a long time to finish that lab too because I kept second guessing myself. In the end, it definitely made me more cautious about clicking links in emails.

  3. Great choice in the background! It reminds me of those blankets that you use for picnics. E-commerce is convenient for us to use when trying to buy something but I agree that we have to be aware with people that are trying to scam and it is truly frustrating to deal with those type of people.

  4. Hi Mikayla, I think it’s really important to learn how to balance your life between work, the people you love, and your own enjoyment, life is all about that. It’s nice that you noticed how the professor supports students, because that really makes a difference in a class like this. I also thought it was interesting that you run your own e-commerce business, and it’s great that in this class you’re learning things you can directly apply to your business.

  5. Hello Mikayla, I love music! And that includes musical instruments. I am curious what instruments you play. :) Also I agree that IS101's biggest challenge is time management and not the contents of the material itself. And I can relate to you about the videos and labs being much better and allows you to absorb more knowledge without getting tired or bored easily compared to reading blocks and blocks of texts.

  6. Hi Mikayla, it’s nice that you stay so active even with a busy schedule. Balancing school, work, and life can definitely be challenging. The topic you chose about ecommerce safety is really interesting, especially since you run your own online business. Knowing how to protect data and avoid scams is very important when dealing with online transactions. Good luck with the rest of the class!

  7. Hi Mikayla! Having a good balance between family, work, and school is tough to figure out but I'm sure you'll be able to find something that works out, I'm still working on that even now. I also love going outside and being active, hiking and trail running are some of my favorites. The "D" projects are very time consuming and I haven't figured out a way to manage them the best. I agree that the interactive parts of the LabSim are actually kind of fun and enjoyable, so much better than a textbook! Running a business seems difficult, I'm sure that the ecommerce safety section has some familiar information for you. Wish you the best for the rest of the semester!

  12. Hello Mikayla, I definitely agree that the most difficult thing of this class is managing and devoting that time. Also to see that the assignment task help reminded you and taught you to understand the dangers of the web. Shows how it can be a benefit to how you view and possibly operate your e-commerce business that can only be a benefit.

  13. Hey Mikayla, that's really neat and you're the first person I know that has an e-commerce business they are a part of I wish you success! With e-commerce safety the only thing I know to do is never buy things online, while not at home like somewhere in public, you don't know who can see these transactions or even spot your info when you're not connected to wifi or on public wifi doing these kinds of things!
